    • The JRR has one public access terminal that can be used for up to 15 minutes
    • This computer is primarily used for printing and checking email, as it does not have any productivity software such as Word or Excel
  • Laptops
    • The JRR has 20 MacBook Pro computers that may be checked out for 4 hours.
    • The laptops are for use in the JRR only
    • Laptop software includes both Microsoft Office for Mac and Adobe Creative Suite programs
    • Users will be required to sign an equipment checkout contract and confidentiality waiver for checkout of all computer and audio visual equipment from the JRR. See a copy of the contract here and the waiver here.

Connecting to the Internet

Vilas Hall (including the JRR) is a wireless access point, so anyone with a UW NetID may connect to the wireless internet from JRR or personally owned laptops. For instructions on logging into the UW wirless internet please see this DoIT page on connecting to the wireless network. Ethernet cords are also available for checkout in the JRR for a wired connection

Printing

The JRR has one public use printer which is connected only to the public access termainal. In order to print, you will have to use a removable storage device (such as a CD or USB drive) or place your file online (such as on the UW's MyWebspace) and then open it on the public computer. Printing costs 7 cents per page and can only be paid for by a UW copy card. There is no copy card machine in Vilas Hall, so the nearest place to purchase one is the Business Library, just across Park Street in Grainger Hall.

Copying

There is a copy machine just outside the JRR. Copying costs 10 cents per page and must be paid for by UW copy card. JRR materials may be taken into the hallway in order to use the copy machine.

Widescreen Monitor

In the Frank Thayer Alcove, there is a 32-inch widescreen monitor that students and Journalism faculty/staff may use for presentations or meetings. The monitor may be used with a Mac Mini that is already attached (along with a wireless keyboard and mouse) or connected to your own laptop. Please see the Frank Thayer Alcove page for more information.

Food and Drink Policy

Food and covered drinks are allowed in the JRR, provided patrons take care to contain or clean up any mess, and do not disturb other patrons.
