Guide to Industry Research
The following are library databases that you can use to find industry information. All the databases can be found in the E-Resources Gateway on the UW Libraries home page and can be accessed both in the library and remotely from your own computer when you log in with your NetID. If you need help finding any information, contact the JRR.
Investor Analyst Reports
- One Source: Investor analyst reports for industries can be found in OneSource. All reports are available as PDF documents. OneSource groups analysts’ reports under broad OneSource industry categories. To search for reports on narrow or specific industries, locate the broad category under which your industry operates.
- Click on the industry hyperlink
- On the right hand side of the screen, select the industry (or the industry nearest to the industry) you are researching – do not try to use the links on the left hand side of the screen, they will only bring you to the SIC code and definition/description of that particular industry
- In the upper right hand corner, click on the “Analysts’ Reports” hyperlink, you will now be in the investor analysts’ reports screen
- Long reports can be found at the top of the page and short reports can be found at the bottom of the page, all reports are available in PDF format
- Standard and Poor's Net Advantage To view S&P Industry Reports:
- Click on the Industries tab
- Select an industry from the Industry Surveys drop-down menu
- Click the orange box to begin the search
- Use the hyperlinks at the top of the report to navigate through the industry report, the report is also available as a PDF document
Market Research Reports
- Global Market Information: Heavy on numbers, low on narrative analysis – use Global Market Information to find: market size, sector size, consumer profiles, market and sector forecasts as well as the revenue, sales, or profits of the industry’s major players. Contains international and U.S. industry data. To access reports:
- Click Browse Reports
- Click Major Market Profiles
- Select a report to view by clicking on the title of the report
- Navigate through the report by clicking the hyperlinks on the left hand side of the screen
- Market Research Monitor: High on numbers and narrative analysis – use Market Research Monitor to find the industry’s: market size, market share, overviews of the industry’s major players, consumer profile, and market and sector forecasts. Contains U.S. industry reports. To access reports:
- Click on the Market Sector tab
- Click on the industry that you are interested in researching
- Check the box before the report that you are interested in viewing (you can check more than one report at a time)
- Click on the Selected Items icon that appears on the right hand side of the screen to view the report(s)
- Navigate through the report by clicking the hyperlinks on the left hand side of the screen
- Mintel Reports: The contents of Mintel Reports vary by industry. Examples of some of the more common contents are: market size and trends, market drivers, consumer attitudes, advertising and marketing, and retail distribution. Contains international and U.S. industry reports. To access reports:
- Read and scroll through the first screen - click I Agree at the bottom of the page
- Click on the broad industry category that your industry will most likely appear
- Scroll through the list of reports until you locate a report of interest
- Click on the report to view its contents – please note that there may be multiple reports with the same name, make sure to choose the most recent report
- To navigate through the report click on the hyperlinks and/or use the drop down menu located at the top of the screen
- You can download the report, in sections, as an rtf or zip file
